ハワイ:新型インフルエンザの影響で、日本人観光客の減少続く

Japanese visitors still spooked by flu

Japanese visitor arrivals in Hawaii continue to decline by double digits because of the international flu scare.

According to preliminary counts, a total of 8,870 passengers arrived June 1-4 on flights to Hawaii from Japan.

That’s a 32 percent drop from the same period in 2008, about 1,000 fewer visitors per day.

The Japanese visitor falloff begin the second week in May and was directly attributed to swine flu, also called H1N1 influenza A.

Even though Japan has reported, as of Wednesday, 385 swine flu cases of its own, ranking it among the top six countries affected by the infection, many Japanese companies have banned employees from overseas travel.

The swine flu outbreak is also affecting travel from other Asian countries to North America and Europe, according to Hawaii Tourism Asia.

The South Korean travel industry reports 15-30 percent cancellation rates in trips to U.S. destinations since the end of April. Cancellations to Hawaii are under 10 percent.

The Chinese travel industry, meantime, said cancellations in outbound travel are increasing, with fewer new-booked packages to the U.S.

アメリカのインターネット事情

Census: American Internet use surges

Sixty-four percent of Americans 18 and older reported using the Internet in 2007, up from just 22 percent a decade earlier.

That's according to a report released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau, which also shows that 62 percent of the nation's households report using the Internet at home in 2007, an 18 percent increase from 1997.

Among households using the net in 2007, 82 percent reported using a high-speed connection, and 17 percent used a dial-up connection.

“As access to high speed connections have become more prevalent, so too have the number of people that connect to the Internet at home,” said Thom File, a statistician with the Census Bureau Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division. “These data give us a better understanding of who is using the Internet and from where.”

Among the states, New Hampshire had the highest rate of Internet use for those age three and older in 2007 at 82 percent. Mississippi and West Virginia had the lowest rates of use at about 52 percent. California's rate 69 percent, just above the national average of 67.1 percent.

Internet usage also varied by education and race. For individuals 25 and older with a bachelor’s degree, 87 percent reported going online from some location in 2007. About half (49 percent) of those with only a high school diploma reported using the Internet, compared with 19 percent for those without a high school diploma. Meanwhile, 69 percent of whites lived in households with Internet use. The same was true for 51 percent of blacks, 73 percent of Asians and 48 percent of Hispanics.

ブエノスアイレス発パリ行きのエアフランス便(5/27)に爆弾テロ予告

Air France Bomb Threat Before Flight 447 Crash

Brazilian authorities reportedly delayed an Air France flight from Buenos Aires to Paris after the airline received a bomb threat over the phone, just days before the mysterious crash of Flight 447 over the Atlantic Ocean.

According to a Brazilian news report, police and airport officials spent 90 minutes inspecting the threatened plane for explosives on the evening of May 27 at Buenos Aires' Ezeiza Airport, but found nothing.

During the search, passengers were not evacuated from the jet and later safely arrived at their destination in Paris.

Continental Pilot Reports Missile Flying Near His Plane Over Texas

A Continental Express pilot reported seeing a "missile or rocket" flying near his aircraft over Friday night over Texas, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The pilot told the Federal Aviation Administration an object was spotted within 150 feet below his airplane around 8:15 p.m. Friday night over Liberty County, Texas, the newspaper reported.

Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor told FOXNews.com that officials met Tuesday with the FBI and the FAA to investigate the pilot's claims.

"We put all our notes together, and after they debrief the pilot we will have more information to go on," DeFoor said.

The plane had 29 people on board and was heading from Houston to South Carolina, he said. There were no interruptions in the flight.

DeFoor told FOXNews.com he couldn't say whether or not terrorism was suspected or if the plane was targeted. Graduation ceremonies were being held about the same time as the pilot reported seeing the rocket, and it could have been a hobby rocket someone set off.

“The pilot, from what we understand, was former military," Cpl. Hugh Bishop of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department told the Chronicle. "He was able to get the coordinates down real quick.”

But, Bishop said deputies searched for where a missile might have been launched from and found nothing.

The plane reportedly was flying around 13,000 feet.

The FAA referred all questions to the sheriff's office. Attempts to the reach the FBI in Houston were not immediately successful.
